Meyer Shank Racing’s Qualifying Draw will see Harvey qualify 26th and Castroneves qualify 4th on Saturday
Indianapolis, Ind. (21 May 2021) – The boost was turned up for INDYCAR’s annual “Fast Friday” which saw Meyer Shank Racing drivers Jack Harvey and Helio Castroneves both clocked in lap speeds above 230 mph for the first time this week.
The day was solely focused on qualifying simulations for MSR’s two-car INDYCAR effort. Rather than pack running which has been a common sight the last few days, drivers were focused on finding enough clean track time to test out their fastest four lap average to prepare for qualifying.
Harvey got off to a quick start right in the beginning of practice as one of the first drivers to make a qualifying test run. Harvey’s best four lap average of 229.946 mph held within the top 10 throughout the early afternoon hours. After the team made several set up changes to best prepare the No. 60 AutoNation / SiriusXM Honda for tomorrow’s qualifying run, Harvey finished out the day 16th on the top speed charts.
Top Speed: 230.772 mph (P16)
Best Four Lap Average: 229.946
Total Laps: 29
The three time Indianapolis 500 champion is no stranger to pushing the limits around the 2.5-mile speedway. Castroneves looked to get the most out of his No. 06 AutoNation / SiriusXM Honda during each of his qualifying simulations and held a secure spot within the top 10 in the closing hours of the day. Following six hours of final practice ahead of qualifying, Castroneves closed out the day 21st on the top speed charts.
Top Speed: 230.512 mph (P21)
Best Four Lap Average: 230.064
Total Laps: 48
Saturday will see the field fo 35 drivers fight for 33 spots with qualifying set for 12:00pm – 5:50pm ET. After Friday’s qualifying draw Harvey will roll out 26th for qualifying while Castroneves will go out 4th in the order.
Full coverage will be streamed on Peacock TV. NBC will provide coverage from 2:00-3:00pm ET and NBCSN from 3:00-6:00pm ET. SiriusXM will also provide live radio on SiriusXM CH. 205.
Jack Harvey: “I think that if we put together the very best that we can do, I feel like we may just make the Fast Nine. If we don’t do the very best that we can do, I still think that we have a top 15 car. It’s going to be snug for us a bit – we didn’t make the step today that I thought we might have. I think we can be looking forward to our best starting position in Indy so far but we just want it to be as high up as possible.”
Helio Castroneves: “I think at the end of the day the No. 06 AutoNation / SiriusXM car was in a happy zone. We can hopefully qualify in the Fast Nine and then we can get a little but more crazy but as of right now we are limited in the things that we can do. But I think our chances are looking good for tomorrow.”
